Specific Responsibilities

 

The Operations Geologist II - DB for Apache Corporation will be a member of Apache’s Operations Geology team at the company’s Houston office reporting to the Geology Senior Manager - Operations Geology.

This role will be primarily responsible for the following:

  • Be responsible for well placement (Geosteering) while drilling lateral sections. 
  • Act as a technical expert in pre-job modeling to design and execute directional plans to drill horizontal wells. 
  • Review existing vertical and lateral offsets data and Geosteering interpretation to assist in the pre-job modeling & planning process, hazards prediction and mitigation. 
  • Act as a technical expert providing advice as to suitable reservoir navigation technologies applicable to challenges presented by Geosteering horizontal wells. 
  • Assist with logistics scheduling mud logging providers and executing logging programs as required by G&G needs. 
  • Monitor real-time data while drilling and execute the objectives set out in pre-job modeling process. 
  • Communicate clearly with drilling and G&G functions to provide updates on drilling progress, challenges, and changes in the decision-making process. 
  • Provide end-of-well reports including performance and lessons learned to be used in future horizontal wells drilling. 
  • Provide Geosteering related reports that will assist completions in their job design process. 
  • Assist in the mentoring of staff within the Operations Geology function. 
  • Will be expected to work flexible hours and weekends as necessary (i.e. during critical well operations and while drilling horizontal sections for assigned wells). 

Qualifications & Experience

 

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology/Geosciences, Engineering, or related field. 
  • 2-10 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. 
  • Field experience in mud logging, LWD, Directional Drilling, or wireline logging desirable. 
  • Advanced understanding of geophysics, geology, petrophysics, LWD, and directional drilling. 
  • Strong understanding of drilling operations affecting the Geosteering horizontal wells process. 
  • Geosteering experience across different basins in the US particular the Permian. 
  • Familiar with Geosteering and Geoscience software packages (StarSteer preferred). 
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment across multiple disciplines. 
  • Communicate clearly and establish relationships across multi-disciplinary teams.
