Specific Responsibilities

The EH&S Projects Manager will be a member of Apache’s EH&S at the company’s Houston office reporting to the EH&S Director - Global Regulatory and will lead and manage EH&S program execution for a variety of complex oil and gas projects, including new exploration/appraisal, decommissioning of end-of-life assets, divestitures, acquisitions,  and any additional specialized projects required to execute global strategy.

This role will be primarily responsible for the following:

  • Understand business objectives to conceptualize, recommend and implement EH&S business processes that ensure alignment with corporate strategy
  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of company and contract EH&S professionals to support the full lifecycle of exploration, appraisal and/or development projects.
  • Oversee and ensure the compliant execution of asset decommissioning projects by managing and implementing an effective risk based EH&S Management System.
  • For acquisitions, mergers and divestitures, develop strategies and execute plans to successfully safely integrate EH&S personnel, systems, data and applications.   
  • Ensure projects align with the Apache Management System as well as international, federal, state and local environmental, health, safety, and emissions/atmospherics regulations. Provide technical guidance on US, UK and new entry regulatory requirements, with an emphasis on safe operations, environmental permit acquisition, and emergency preparedness.
  • Develop and enforce project specific contractor safety management programs, ensuring that third-party contractors and service providers meet stringent EH&S performance standards throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with applicable department leads and stakeholders ensuring project timelines and milestones are effectively developed, managed, and communicated, remaining flexible in unconventional project environments.
  • Lead initiatives to integrate energy efficiency, sustainability, and emissions reduction strategies into complex projects.
  • Participate in industry advocacy efforts to progress company position. 
  • Provides guidance on interpretation and application of specified regulations. 
  • Monitor the regulatory environment across all projects to allow for efficient organizational response to new legislation. 
  • Maintain relationships with the community, regulators, and other stakeholders impacted by the performance of the organization. 
  • Develop the EH&S/Regulatory project budgets and monitor accordingly.  Support asset budget accrual and review processes, as well as cost cutting initiatives. 

Qualifications & Experience

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and advanced degree, preferably in the field(s) of environmental management, safety and health, business and/or engineering
  • 15+ years of oil and gas experience: EH&S, Regulatory, Compliance and Operations
  • 7+ years people management/leadership experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of exploration and development programs, procedures and practices
  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with various internal and external stakeholders  
  • Proven track record demonstrating the ability to learn new and complex national and international regulations
  • Balanced technical aptitude: risk management, developing/writing/understanding management systems and associated documents, onshore and offshore oil and gas project lifecycle, project planning and management, emergency preparedness, spill management, emissions management, environmental permitting, environmental and social impact assessments, contractor safety management, incident management and investigation, etc.
  • Thorough understanding of drilling/workover, pipeline and plant/facility operations
  • Ability to apply knowledge and use critical thinking skills to achieve work responsibilities 
  • Ability to identify, research and obtain required information
  • Work independently with little direction 
  • Strong managerial and leadership skills with the ability to foster teamwork
