Specific Responsibilities
The Facilities Engineer supports the planning, design, and execution of Central Tank Batteries (CTBs), Central Gathering Compression (CGC) facilities, satellite facilities, flowlines, well hook-ups, and gathering systems in the Midland Basin within established schedule and budget guidance. Working with Production Operations, Production Engineering, and more experienced engineers, this role helps identify area needs, develop practical facility solutions, and move projects from concept through safe startup. The position offers broad exposure to the production system and room to build technical skills, take initiative, learn from feedback, and grow into greater ownership of area outcomes.
- Support asset team planning by learning the assigned area of interest (AOI), its production constraints, reliability issues, and development priorities. Develop facility options and cost comparisons and recommend a preferred solution for review by a senior engineer.
- Work with Operations, Production Engineering, Measurement, Automation, Environmental, Regulatory, Safety, Supply Chain, fabricators, contractors, and inspection personnel on assigned projects, contributing to design, layout, and equipment selection and sizing. Build working relationships that keep projects aligned with field needs.
- Lead small to moderate-complexity projects, and support larger projects under a senior engineer, from scoping through startup. Track safety, scope, cost, schedule, risks, and operational impact; provide regular status updates and raise constraints early to the project lead or supervisor.
- Prepare scopes of work (SOWs), cost estimates, project execution plans (PEPs), design basis memoranda (DBMs), and authorization for expenditure (AFE) packages with guidance and review from a senior engineer. Summarize the operating need, alternatives, and expected business value to support approvals.
- Check facility designs and the selection and sizing of production equipment, safety devices, control valves, dump valves, and regulators against expected operating conditions, engineering data, and field input, using established standards and tools. Consult senior engineers or vendors on complex or non-standard applications.
- Participate in process hazard analysis (PHA) reviews and help ensure likely operating conditions and safeguards are reflected in Cause and Effect (C&E) documents. Identify when a change may require Management of Change (MOC) review and initiate the process with guidance.
- Review construction drawings and requests for quotation (RFQs) alongside third-party engineering firms, construction foremen, and Operations. Flag design or constructability issues, recommend solutions with attention to safety, simplicity, and lifecycle cost, and escalate for resolution as needed.
- Walk down facilities and use engineering, vendor, production, and operating data to identify constraints and propose practical process improvements. Follow up on implementation and track results in uptime, reliability, or operating cost.
- Support commissioning plans and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs), assist with handoff to Operations, and help verify that completed changes perform as intended. Document startup issues and lessons for future projects.
- Apply required safety practices in engineering decisions, field work, and driving. Recognize hazards, use appropriate controls, and stop or escalate unsafe work.
Qualifications & Experience
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or an equivalent degree.
- 3+ years of facilities engineering experience
- Production engineering experience a plus
- Working knowledge of upstream oil and gas production facilities and the interactions among wells, gathering systems, compression, water handling, and field operations.
- Ability to use production data and field observations to diagnose constraints, evaluate alternatives, and explain the expected effect on uptime, reliability, and cost.
- Familiarity with process and facility engineering fundamentals, including equipment sizing, hydraulics, P&IDs, control and safeguarding concepts, and commissioning practices.
- Ability to translate technical analysis into clear recommendations, execution plans, and concise business updates.
- Experience with facility design, debottlenecking, production optimization, or production operations is valued.
- Experience with tools such as PipeSim, ProMax, Aspen HYSYS, or equivalents is helpful, but not required.
